Russia Phone Number Validator & Carrier Lookup

Russia's most distinctive numbering trait is its trunk prefix: dialled domestically, numbers start with 8 before the 10-digit national number โ€” not the 0 used across most of Europe โ€” while international callers use the +7 country code. Every mobile number begins with 9. The market is served by four operators: MTS, MegaFon, Beeline and t2 (the former Tele2 Russia).

Russia phone number format

Russia numbers carry the +7 country code with a national trunk prefix of 8, dropped in E.164 format. Mobile and fixed-line ranges are distinguished by their leading digits and returned as a line_type you can filter on.

+7 912 345-67-89
Domestic form: 8 (912) 345-67-89 โ€” the trunk prefix 8 is dropped for international format. 10 digits after +7.
Fixed line โ€” E.164 format
+7 301 123-45-67
Domestic form: 8 (301) 123-45-67 โ€” the trunk prefix 8 is dropped for international format. 10 digits after +7.

Russia mobile operators & prefixes

Each mobile prefix is allocated to a specific operator. Veriphone returns that operator from the Roskomnadzor numbering plan, along with line type.

Each prefix belongs to one operator โ€” but a number can be ported. The prefix tells you the operator a number was originally allocated to. Because Russia allows number portability, a number can keep its prefix after switching networks, so the prefix alone doesn't guarantee the operator serving it today. A Standard lookup returns the allocated operator; add mode=current to resolve the operator serving a ported number now.

Ported numbers. Number portability was introduced in Russia in 2013 and became fully operational across all four operators by 2014, letting subscribers keep their number when they switch. A Standard lookup returns the operator that originally held the number's block, so it can be stale once a number has been ported; mode=current resolves the operator actually serving it today.

Questions about Russia number validation

Do I dial 8 or +7 in front of a Russian number?

Domestically Russia uses the trunk prefix 8 before the 10-digit national number; from abroad, drop the 8 and dial the +7 country code instead. Never use both together.

Is +7 unique to Russia?

No. Kazakhstan shares country code +7, so a +7 number can be Russian or Kazakh. The digits after the code distinguish them โ€” Russian mobiles begin with 9, while Kazakh ranges use 6 and 7.

Why does the returned operator not match the current provider?

Because the number may have been ported. A Standard lookup returns the operator that originally held the number's block; use mode=current to get the operator now serving it.
